Spaces sewn together to create a striking and sustainable home

Pitched House saw the transformation of a modest East-London terrace into a striking and sustainable modern home. The alterations took the form of a wraparound ground floor rear extension with a dramatic ‘saw-tooth’ pitched roof, and loft extension across the main house and half width outrigger to create a new second floor. As well as adding a voluminous multi-purpose kitchen with access to the garden, the two new bedrooms in the loft feature stunning views out over London.

Derived from the historical context of the local area as a hub for cloth merchants, the design is intended to appear as if the new elements of the home have been draped across the original parts. The distinctive roof forms of the original building have been used to sew the different elements together. The whole development was finished using low-energy and natural materials, accompanied with a complete house retrofit that hugely improved the houses environmental performance.

The property is situated within a varied streetscape comprised of primarily residential houses – with a park and a social club, and blocks of flats, near the northern border of the Borough of Newham, East London.
