PLIMSOLL LINE

Loft conversion | Rear extension | House refurbishment | Thermal upgrade

Location: Islington, London
Sector: Residential Architects
Works: Rear Extension & Loft Conversion
Project Value: £250k
Status: Completed 2021

Linking old and new through a refined roof and rear extension

This North London residential architecture and build project involved the complete refurbishment of a late 19th-century mid-terrace house including roof and rear extension. The thermal upgrade package to the property involves the use of alternative low-energy materials including earth plaster finishes and the omission of MDF for joinery purposes.

Building on the unique history of the Plimsoll line and its relevance to the site, the form of the existing building is used to establish a series of horizontal and vertical reference lines against which the proposals will be balanced.

The building levels act as datums, expressed internally and externally. Datums are defined through the composition of the material language that will float old and new together. Establishing settled yet distinct junctions will bring equilibrium between elements. The change in materiality across the datums will describe the flow of the spaces and define movement through the building.
