Seamlessly connecting home to garden to create a bright, flexible hub for modern living
This project saw the rear transformation of a North London 19th-century mid-terrace residential property. The primary ambition was to transform the existing cold and dark kitchen space into a bright, open, and flexible hub for modern living, by adding a rear side return and opening up the space.
The design was driven by the need to establish a seamless flow that could accommodate both lively family gatherings and peaceful, quiet moments, while also improving the connection between the front and back of the house. A key element of the design was to integrate the beautiful garden into the main living space, creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection.
The material language of the new extension was carefully considered to build on the historic context of the property, and to tie with the wild nature outside. The introduction of warm-toned timber cladding, used to frame a large window seat, complements the existing London stock bricks, allowing the contemporary addition to stand out while integrating with the home's historic fabric. The composition of these materials works to define the new, flexible space and create a welcoming, light-filled environment that perfectly balances the old with the new.
