We're Reclaiming the Title of The 21st-Century Master Builder
Last week, our Director, Ben Powell, took to the stage at the RIBA Guerrilla Tactics conference, exploring ‘The DNA of Practice.’ His keynote, 'Foundations of Purpose: Shaping identity beyond the portfolio,' tackled the core question: how do we turn our deeply held values into tangible value for our clients?

From Architect to Master Builder
The simple fact is, many clients don't know what an architect really does. While our technical and statutory responsibilities are constantly expanding, the sheer complexity of our role can easily be lost or misunderstood by clients.
Our strategy is to reclaim the ‘Master Builder’ ethos in order to convert our values into real value for our clients. A master builder was a historical figure who seamlessly integrated design, craft, and management to build some of history’s most well known pieces of architecture. We are reimagining this for the 21st Century, to deliver value to clients on projects of all scales and all budgets.

Our DNA: Values in Action
At Studio Manifest, this means embedding our values into three core themes to deliver sustainable and cost-effective services:
Active Research: We bring our low-energy and low-embodied carbon innovation (including Passivhaus principles) to every project, challenging construction norms.
Simplicity: We cut the jargon and use technology to streamline delivery. This makes high-quality, energy-efficient architecture more accessible and stress-free.
Culture: We foster an inclusive, empowered environment that ensures our architects are driven problem-solvers and technical leaders, not just glorified draughtsmen.
Ben talking with the panel in the final Q&A
It was fantastic to connect with so many engaged practitioners focused on building better, more resilient firms. A stand-out moment was the final Q&A panel, where he shared the stage with industry leaders and discussed the future agency of architects. The energy and shared commitment confirmed that purpose-driven practice is absolutely the future.
